Description
Circa 1850s Sheffield made Bowie knife for the California market by Samuel Hancock and Son, Mazeppa Works, 55 Peacroft Sheffield. 15 - 1/4" overall with a 10 - 1/4" clip point blade with a 4" sharpened false edge. Full length acid etch panel reads "GOLD MINERS PROTECTOR" with maker stamp above "SAML HANCOCK / PEACROFT / SHEFFIELD". Ricasso stamped with a horse and reverse riding man "MAZEPPA". Reverse turned "cowhorn" shaped silver crossguard with scales of polished horn with nickel silver trim, pommel, elongated silver shield escutcheon, held in place with 6 silver pins. CONDITION: Very good. Typical cleaning and scattered age discoloration. Edge has been only lightly sharpened with no visible nicks or dings. Blade and scales tight to tang with no wobble. Blade Length: 10 - 1/4" Overall Length: 15 - 1/4"
