In 1978, Star Wars was allowed to be produced for television which resulted in the creation of the Star Wars Holiday Special. This project brought some embarrassment to George Lucas, who then took greater control over the Ewoks TV project. Initially, it was planned as a half-hour special but was eventually expanded to a two-hour movie of the week after ABC showed interest. The movie was also released for a limited international theatrical run and was retitled as Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure.
