Description
USS Indianapolis: 11'"x14" Certificate on heavy parchment style paper, honoring the Survivors of the USS Indianapolis, the Heavy Cruiser sunk midnight July, 30 th 1945. it has been estimated that 880 of the 1196 men on board the ship made it into the water, the ship sinking in 12 minutes. The men in the water endured 4 days and 5 nights fighting sharks. Only 317 men were rescued. This Certificate is one that was given to each Survivor at the1996 USS Indianapolis Reunion. Printed by Congress with the Congressional Gold Seal, for the 103 rd Congress Law 103 337, the Certificate recognizes the contributions of the USS Indianapolis to ending WWII. Three years later the 106 th Congress passed a joint resolution to exonerate the ship's Captain, the late Rear Admiral Charles McVay III, and award a Presidential Unit Citation to the final crew of the ship. Certificate has been boldly signed by 55 Survivors, each with his name and rank. The certificate comes with a copy of Senate Congressional Record, May 25, 1999, correcting the injustice to Capt. McVay and final Roster of the Ship.
