Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pretty turned wood hibachi brazier, possibly crafted from paulownia (kiri wood), showcasing exquisite craftsmanship in a cylindrical design. The smooth rounded rim and base are adorned with intricate carvings of birds and foliage, enhanced by delicate inlays of mother of pearl and copper. Traditionally used as a brazier or fire bowl, the interior bowl of this hibachi is crafted from copper, designed to hold coal or charcoal for heating rooms and warming tea or sake. While many English speakers may associate "hibachi" with the teppanyaki restaurant style of cooking, it actually translates to "brazier" or "fire bowl," showcasing its versatile historical use beyond culinary applications. Hibachis, like this elegant piece, served not only functional purposes but also served as decorative elements, adding beauty and charm to living spaces. Size: 14" Diameter x 8.5" H (35.6 cm x 21.6 cm)
