Item Details
Description
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. mid-19th century CE. A pretty matching pair of porcelain Canton famille rose plates, brightly painted and gilt with butterflies, elephants, birds, flowers, beetles, and crickets. Notably, the presence of Urdu script at the center and a crescent moon beneath the elephants signifies their purpose as export wares tailored to Indian and Islamic preferences. The central panel is elegantly adorned with an inscription in possibly Urdu or Persian script, adding a further layer of cultural richness to these exquisite pieces. Below are the initials "N.L.M.B." perhaps an English / European company that facilitated trade between the Near East and China during this time. Size: 10" Diameter (25.4 cm)
