Item Details
Description
Northwestern Africa, Sahara Desert, Lower Paleolithic, Acheulean period, ca. 1,200,000 to 500,000 years ago. A massive, knapped chert Acheulean hand axe, meticulously crafted and wielded by early humans such as Homo erectus (ergaster); surface-collected from an exposed site in the Sahara Desert! Prior to the Acheulean period, only crude pebble and flake tools existed in the human fossil record. At 8 lb. (3.6 kilos), this hand axe makes one wonder about its function, and theories range from practical hunting implements to objects of prestige, worship, or ritual significance - one thing is certain: this hand axe was not wielded lightly! In an era where survival hinged upon the successful procurement of large game animals such as elephants, bison, and rhinoceros- hand axes played a vital role in hunting and processing meat. The sheer size and weight suggest a weapon designed for delivering a decisive, crushing blow to incapacitate a massive animal or split bones for the marrow. Size: 11" L x 7.5" W x 4" H (27.9 cm x 19 cm x 10.2 cm)

Special features of this hand axe are worth noting. It displays a glossy, dark "desert varnish" wind-polished patina only on one side where it lay undisturbed and exposed to blowing sands, for hundreds of thousands of years. The other side is dull as it lay face down, protected and laying directly against the red Saharan sand. This accounts for the redder color on this side. Every original flaked aspect of this specimen is perfect as made with no modern damage including an original, unbroken delicate tip. Prehistoric sediment and mineral encrustations are still present in microscopic crevices and on some surfaces - traits found in authentic Paleolithic artifacts like this. These features are a testament to the age and authenticity of this massive tool! The rarity of this specimen speaks volumes, with only a select few examples of such magnitude known to exist.
