A clipped receipt signed by Founding Father Thomas Stone. Measuring 8" x 1", N.p., dated ca. July 6, 1780. Signed "T:Stone", acknowledging the receipt of ?1316 as "my allowance on Journal March Session in 1 Cert No. 62." On verso is another receipt, dated July 3, 1780, in an unknown hand. With light toning throughout. Adhesive staining at the edges. There are a few small tears at the edges. Boldly signed by Stone.

Thomas Stone (1743-1787) was born into a prominent family in Charles County, Maryland, and studied law under Thomas Johnson in Annapolis. He gained admission to the bar in 1764 and opened his own practice in Frederick, Maryland. From 1774 to 1776, he served as a member of Maryland?s Annapolis Convention and was a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1775, 1776, 1778, and 1784. He signed the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Maryland, worked on the committee that formed the Articles of Confederation in 1777, and briefly served as president of the Confederation Congress in 1784.
