Early "Shell" Royal Dutch Company Stock SPECIMEN Certificate

A stock SPECIMEN for the Royal Dutch Company for the Working of Petroleum Wells in Netherlands-India, better recognized as Royal Dutch Shell or just simply Shell. 1p, measuring 12" x 7.75", New York, n.d. [ca. 1917]. Unissued, No. 00000, for 100 American Shares. Blank transfer form on verso. Accompanied by a colored engraved print entitled "A Scene in India (The Tiger Hunt), drawn by W. Daniell and engraved by A. Dick. The certificate has faint toning and light wear, overall very fine. The engraving has toning to the edges, which are slightly uneven. Ex. R.M. Smythe 1992, sold for $220. We can find no other example online.
Shell was formed in 1907 through the merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum Company of the Netherlands and The "Shell" Transport and Trading Company of the United Kingdom. The combined company rapidly became the leading competitor of the American Standard Oil and by 1920 Shell was the largest producer of oil in the world.
