Very early canal stock! Issued in 1799 to Samuel Blodget, Junior, of Philadelphia for one share. Signed by Samuel Blodget as president and Samuel Kidder as clerk. Not cancelled. Black print on thick paper. 6.25 x 7.25" Fold, light wear. Samuel Blodgett Sr. was an early American lawyer, industrialist, and financier who founded the city of Manchester, New Hampshire. He built this canal in 1807 around Amoskeag Falls to aid in navigation of ships traveling up and down the Merrimack River. His son ( who this stock is issued to) served on George Washington's staff during the Revolutionary War. He later served as the chairman of the board of commissioners tasked with designing the capital city (Washington DC).
