George Washington Reverse Painted Battle of Trenton Portrait After John Trumbull
Framed Artwork

A reverse portrait painting on glass of George Washington (1732-1799) in military uniform after an original painting by John Trumbull (1756-1843). Ca. late 18th/early 19th century. N.p. An extremely faithful reproduction of Trumbull's original oil on canvas, with the only notable difference being the color of Washington's uniform. Framed in a period gilt frame. Not examined out of the frame. Expected wear including isolated areas of paint flaking, peeling, and pinprick loss mostly confined to the background. Washington's face and figure are not affected. A handwritten note is attached to the frame backing verso. Wear to the frame commensurate with use and age. The sight size of the reverse painting is 10.5" x 15.875" while the overall frame size is 12.5" x 17.875" x 1.375."

John Trumbull's portrait of George Washington had been commissioned by the city of Charleston, South Carolina to commemorate the president's visit there in May 1791. Trumbull's resultant work was a 1792 oil on canvas entitled "General George Washington at Trenton" (Yale University Art Gallery), and a smaller ca. 1792-1794 copy, "George Washington Before the Battle of Trenton" (Metropolitan Museum of Art). Trumbull's painting shows Washington standing at center, his facial expression and body posture exuding complete confidence. Though the city of Charleston later rejected Trumbull's painting because they considered it too martial, Trumbull's depiction of Washington as the triumphant Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army on the eve of the victorious December 26, 1776 Battle of Trenton would become an iconic visual tribute to the former military commander.
