Bartolomeo Platina (1421-1481) umanista e storico, detto il Sacchi, “si dedicò alle scienze solo dopo la carriera militare, divenne protetto del cardinale Bessarione a Roma, ma fu sospettato di cospirazione contro papa Paolo II e fu incarcerato. Riabilitato sotto papa Sisto IV, fu bibliotecario della Biblioteca Vaticana dal 1475."Onofrio Panvinio (1530 –1568) è stato uno storico italiano, nonché uno dei più importanti studiosi della storia romana e di quella ecclesiastica.

Hundreds of portraits of the popes within woodcut frames. Woodcut finals and initials. Restorations and reinforcements to the title page and on the first 3 leaves. Some very light browning. Nice specimen.

Bartolomeo Platina (1421-1481) humanist and historian, known as Sacchi, "dedicated himself to science only after his military career, became a protégé of Cardinal Bessarione in Rome, but was suspected of conspiring against Pope Paul II and was imprisoned. Rehabilitated under Pope Sixtus IV, he was librarian of the Vatican Library from 1475."Onofrio Panvinio (1530 –1568) was an Italian historian, as well as one of the most important scholars of Roman and ecclesiastical history.
