Description
Historiae Augustae: Scriptorum Latinorum Minorum, Pars Tertia - Claudius Salmasius/Claude Saumaise

Historia Augusta, (tr. The Augustan History), is a collection of biographies about the Roman Emperors and their courts during the period 117 to 284. This work is the only continuous account in Latin for much of its period.

Claude Saumaise (15 April 1588 - 3 September 1653), was a French classical scholar, author and critic In 1620, Salmasius published Isaac Casaubon‘s (18 February 1559 - 1 July 1614) notes on the Augustan History, with copious additions of his own.

This book, published in 1631, has excellent provenance, having been in the collections of several scholars, as noted by their ex libris. This is the 1631 publication of the scholar Claudio Salmasio/Claudius Salmusius/Claude Saumaise’s "Historiae Augustae" (816 pages), first published in 1620. This third part, "Scriptorum Latinorum Minorum", includes the works of Aelius Spartianus, Julius Capitolinus, Aelius Lampridius, Vulcatius Gallicanus, Trebellius Pollio and Flavis Vopiscus.

The full vellum cover (app. 3" x 5.25") has a rectangular silver repair to the spine (see photo), but is in very good overall condition, with the attached gold in red title label clean and without tears. The spine itself is straight and securely attached. The vellum is darkened and with short surface cracks, but with no looseness at the hinges, and with no prominent stains (see photo).

The first pages give a partial provenance, with the penned name of Robert D. Duncan to the top of the front end page, the bookplate of Trumbull College, Yale, to the inside front cover, an indication that Duncan donated this book to that college in 1935. There is an ex libris notation of Wayne Sibley Towner, dated 1953, below Duncan’s name, on the front end page. The left hand page in the title spread has the notation "ex libris Johannis Barlow, 1902".

The title page has an indecipherable Latin notation (Sum ??) at its top. I’ve found no other writing, nor are there any stamps or other attachments. The name Marcus Boxhorn-Zuerius, a dutch scholar who was at Leiden the same time as Saumaise, appears at the bottom of the last dedication page .

The binding is tight throughout, with no loose or missing pages. There is shallow edge wear to the first few leaves, but there are no other notable tears and few creases. The lettering is uniformly clean and unfaded.

The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of this copy’s conditions.
