L’opera è ricca di osservazioni precise e acute, tra le quali la distinzione tra il morbillo e il vaiolo, lo studio della sifilide congenita, la descrizione dei disturbi di nutrizione del bambino, il riconoscimento, in accordo con l’opinione di Rhazes (ar-Razi), che l’idrocefalo a volte è provocato da un accumulo intraventricolare di liquido, superando quindi la vecchia classificazione che considerava il caput succedaneum come idrocefalo esterno. Interessanti sono anche le sue osservazioni sulla balbuzie. Inoltre, egli sostenne la contagiosità della pertosse e raccomandò l’asportazione chirurgica completa della ranula, allo scopo di evitarne la ricomparsa.La dedica indica che il libro si basa sugli appunti delle lezioni di uno degli studenti di Mercuriale, Jan Hieronim Chrosciejowski (attivo tra 1583-1612), polacco di Poznań, noto anche come Johannes Groscesius, che aveva ottenuto il dottorato in arti e medicina nel 1582. L'opera è divisa in tre parti: malattie dei bambini, febbri dei bambini e vermi intestinali. Sebbene il libro sia pieno di riferimenti ad autori arabi, greci e romani, Mercuriale usò il proprio giudizio nell'interpretare le loro osservazioni invece di aderire pedissequamente alle loro opinioni come era comune a molti scrittori del XV e XVI secolo.

Rare edition of one of the first books entirely dedicated to pediatrics and children's illnesses. The work is full of precise and acute observations, including the distinction between measles and smallpox, the study of congenital syphilis, the description of nutritional disorders in children, the recognition, in agreement with the opinion of Rhazes (ar-Razi), that hydrocephalus is sometimes caused by an intraventricular accumulation of fluid, thus overcoming the old classification which considered caput succedaneum as external hydrocephalus. His observations on stuttering are also interesting. Furthermore, he supported the contagiousness of whooping cough and recommended the complete surgical removal of the ranula, in order to avoid its reappearance.The dedication indicates that the book is based on the lecture notes of one of Mercuriale's students, Jan Hieronim Chrosciejowski (active between 1583-1612), a Pole from Poznań, also known as Johannes Groscesius, who obtained his doctorate in arts and medicine in 1582. The work is divided into three parts: diseases of children, fevers of children and intestinal worms. Although the book is full of references to Arab, Greek, and Roman authors, Mercurial used his own judgment in interpreting their observations rather than slavishly adhering to their opinions as was common with many 15th and 16th century writers.
