Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A rare example of a hand-built and highly burnished pottery jar depicting a coatimundi, a mammal more commonly found in Central America and South America. The charming creature exhibits perky ears, a pronounced snout with a slanted nose, and dark streaks behind each eye - a signature characteristic of the coatimundi. The upper body is adorned with dense black and red linear motifs that form diagonal stripes and stepped pairs, and the lower body is unadorned. Coatimundi can live as far north as the American Southwest, so this is a particularly unusual form for Casas Grandes artistry. Size: 11.375" L x 6.9" W x 6" H (28.9 cm x 17.5 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: Private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000.
