Description
**Originally Listed At $500**

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. Ten wood-handled iron knives of the style known as kukri or khukuri. Each has a short blade that curves slightly downward; six of them have small notches low on their iron blades, near the handle. The handles are in most cases utilitarian, with lightly incised decoration on three. These knives were made for a variety of practical tasks, and are perhaps most famously known for their use by the Gurkha regiment of the British Army. This style of knife appears in Nepalese heraldry, and is often used in wedding rituals. Size of largest knife: 6" W x 1" H (15.2 cm x 2.5 cm); size of case: 14.8" W x 11.9" H (37.6 cm x 30.2 cm)

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
