Description
South Asia, Nepal, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. An elegant stone stele depicting the historical buddha Shakyamuni standing before a grand mandorla with a small halo emerging from the shoulders and a slender silhouette. Buddha is dressed in a long robe that is meticulously pleated from top to bottom, and clenches one end of the robe in his left hand. His face is finely detailed with beautiful almond shaped eyes framed by elegantly arched brows, a delicate urna on the forehead, a gentle smile, and elongated ears, topped by a multi-tiered, curled coiffure with a pointed, flame-like ushnisha at the top. The base is made of one row of lotus petals rather than the more common double lotus base. A lovely example! Size: 5.25" W x 10" H (13.3 cm x 25.4 cm)
