Description
India, ca. 1st century CE. This is a gorgeous tile from the ruins of Chandraketugarh, a large fortified area protected by a rampart that was a central city for surrounding towns and may be the fabled city of Gangaridai, written about by the Greeks and Romans. The ruins are located near Kolkata (Calcutta). This tile depicts and man and woman standing beneath a temple-like roof with two beautiful, long-tailed birds perched atop it. The artwork of this tile is amazingly well preserved and spectacularly done, a relic of one of the first cities in ancient India. Size: 2" L x 3.8" W x 6.5" H (5.1 cm x 9.7 cm x 16.5 cm).
