Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. A fascinating iron vegetable cutter with a long, flat, horizontal base and a blade that rises up to meet a finial decorated with a seated bird surrounded by leaves. The item was made to be set on the floor, with the base held in place with the foot while the user slices with the blade. Size: 19" W x 21.25" H (48.3 cm x 54 cm)

Provenance: Mark Clayton collection, Long Beach, California, USA; Mr. Clayton is a noted African art collector who recently had Nigerian bronze objects from his collection featured in an exhibition at the UCLA Fowler Museum entitled "Summoning the Ancestors" (September 2018 - March 2019).
