Description
A colored jadeite hardstone Olmec mask. The Olmec people were located in present day Mexico’s Gulf Coast. This type of stone’s origin in Mesoamerica was the Motagua river valley which is the only source of this Jadeite known. The mask is finely carved with wide almond shaped eyes, prominent nose, and thick lips.Themaskhasaturbanlikeheaddresswithtwocordstosecureittothehead. Showingtwoholesoneachsideof the headdress, used for hanging, the back has a concave carving. The mask measures 4 1/8” Tall, 3 1/8” Wide, 1 1??4” Deep. Age unknown. Provenance: Private collection of Enrique Cardenas Olaya.
