Olmec Jadeite Mesoamerica Mask. amethyst and white jadeite Olmec mask. The Olmec people were located in present day Mexico from 1400-400 BC. This type of amethyst and white jadeite was a rare and hardstone to carve. The stones origin in Mesoamerica was the Motagua river valley which is the only source of Jadeite known. The mask is finely carved with almond shaped eyes, prominent nose, big tick leap traits commonly found in Olmec mask. Showing two holes on each side, used for hanging, the back has a concave carving. The mask measures 3 1/8 inches x 2 5/8 inches wide. Provenance: Private collection of Enrique Cardenas Olaya.
