Item Details
Description
Japanese earthenware Haniwa head, Kofun period, 5th to 6th century. Of low-fired reddish clay possibly modeled as a shamaness, with the remains of a tall hat and a bead necklace, the surface decorated in a "comb-tooth" pattern. Displayed on a wooden stand.

Provenance: Purchased from Honeychurch Antiques, Seattle, July 23, 2004; the estate of Miriam S. Poser; Bonham's, New York, "Fine Japanese & Korean Art," March 17, 2021, Lot 626; Private Minnesota Collection.

Height: 16 1/2 in x width: 4 1/2 in x depth: 4 1/2 in.
Condition
There are numerous cracks that have been repaired throughout the mask; some repairs visible under UV light. Some losses to the top of the head and the bottom. Some wear to the wooden stand.
