Shadow Theatre - Hand painted shadow- theatre in wooden box, measuring 280 x 425 x 60 mm. The shadow-theatre consists of wooden box, a wooden theatre stage mounted with paper with hand-painted curtains and top-decoration, and with slids to set upright in front of wooden box; 6 hand-painted sceneries on transparent paper in wooden frames; and 8 players, including three groups of players, cut out and fastened on little stick, with the movable parts held by thin iron wires. Original 19th century box game of a children's shadow theatre, with hand-painted sceneries showing typical Dutch landscapes with little bridges, a church, and a village view, including a river-scene, and a lane in the woods, one showing a Dutch kitchen with an open fire and tiles on the floor. The players and players' groups present men and women, including a Chinese and a soldier, and the groups show 'Jan Klaassen en Katrijn' (The Dutch Punch and Judy Show), Don Quixote riding a mule and Sancho Pansa, and 2 men in a boat with a movable flag and a draggrapple. All the paintings and the players fit into the box, which is closed by a sliding lid. The theatre stage is kept outside the box, which bears the toy seller's label: Strauss & Co., Amsterdam.
