MOVING PANORAMA TOY, 'LONDON TO PARIS', c.1905

Description

MOVING PANORAMA TOY, 'LONDON TO PARIS', c.1905 Model theatre, 295 x 312 x 150 mm, made of wood and paste paper. Consists of proscenium and 'backstage'. The 'backstage is equipped with two wooden rollers. The panorama itself consists of a very large number of sheets conjoined and measures overall 95 x [c.60 feet]. The whole item is housed in a wooden cabinet measuring 290 x 340 x 180 mm. Pen and ink watercolour. Home-made toy theatre. On either side of the stage are real English toy theatre wings. The upper curtains are from Reddington’s Don Quixote. Behind these strips is curtaining. The front of the stage can be lifted to reveal a watercolour image of the orchestra playing. To move the panorama along one twists the rollers below the stage level. The panorama itself has been drawn on translucent paper in a very large number of conjoined strips, and is wound from the l. roller to the r. The title appears on a metal strip fixed above the stage. It also appears on the first image of the panorama. The panorama in this toy takes us from London as far as Calais. A companion toy can be found in the Bill Douglas Collection, Exeter University, continuing the journey from Calais to Paris.
