Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran or Iraq, Luristan or Mesopotamia / Sumer, Bronze Age, ca. 2500 to 2000 BCE. This is a beautiful example of a cast bronze axe-pick with a sophisticated design to the tip and a flared back behind a rimmed socket. It is unclear whether this was used as a weapon / tool or was purely symbolic in function. The beauty of this particular piece is enhanced by the blue tinge to its patina, which is indicative of a higher percentage of tin in its alloy. Size: 7" L x 1" W x 3.4" H (17.8 cm x 2.5 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased from Artemis Gallery, March 9, 2016, lot 32a; ex-John Piscopo estate
