Description
Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran / Turkey, Luristan, Iron Age, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A bronze axe head of dramatic form mold-cast, with a pick like blade, flared butt end, and a cylindrical socket and four pointed tabs around the rim. The rounded edges and thickness of both the blade and blunt butt suggests a ceremonial use such as a prestige item or burial good, rather than as a weapon used in battle.
