FOUR BINOCULARS AND OPERA GLASSES
Continental, late 19th to early 20th century. Mother-of-pearl binoculars, circa 1890. Larger pair of binoculars (damaged). Together with two enamel decorated opera glasses, one with gold diamond design to the blue ground with mother-of-pearl highlights markedm Tiffany & Co. - New York, the other enameled porcelain with ivory color highlights.
From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.
Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
