THREE OPERA GLASSES
One a gold-toned mother-of-pearl pair, circa 1890. Another white mother-of-pearl and aluminum pair marked "Bailey Banks & Biddle Co. - Philadelphia", circa 1885. The last Japanese made for "Star * Lite" with double-action expanding, in brown leather case, circa 1950.
From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.
Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
