Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit & Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A pair of hand-built figures, both with large vent holes atop their heads. The redware figure is seated with one hand to the mouth as if eating / chewing. The other figure is slipped in a creamy white and stands attentively with bulging eyes and elongated feet to balance on. West Mexican shaft tomb figures like this one derive their names from the central architectural feature that we know of from this culture. These people would build generally rectangular vertical shafts down from the ground level down to narrow horizontal tunnels that led to one or more vaulted or rounded burial chambers. These pottery figures were usually grouped alongside vessels and other offerings and positioned around the body (or bodies), near the skull. Size of standing figure: 4" L x 1.5" W x 6" H (10.2 cm x 3.8 cm x 15.2 cm)
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-James Grant collection, Southern California, USA, before 2000
