Description
Heading: (Judaica)
Author: [Schudt, Johann Jakob]
Title: Merkwürdige Bekehrung dreier Judenmädchen
Place Published: Cincinnati, Ohio
Publisher:Hitchcock und Walden
Date Published: c.1860
Description: 32 pp. 11.5x7.5 cm (4½x3"), cloth-backed boards.Apparently unrecorded imprint of a story about the conversion of three young Jewish girls in Berlin, originally included as part of Johann Jakob Schudt's Jüdische Merckwürdigkeiten (1714-1717). The story had piqued Cotton Mather's interest enough to make an early translation into English, on account of his millenarian views that converting Jews to Christianity would be a sign of the end times and beginning of the establishment of the Kingdom of God on Earth, views which certainly inspired the tale in the first place. This version is somewhat edited, but in the original German and particularly interesting for showing the continued relevance of the story to German speakers in the mid-19th United States. Not in OCLC.
