Description
UNIDENTIFIED INUPIAQ ARTIST
Mask, c. 1950s
whalebone, 6 x 5 x 1.5 in (15.2 x 12.7 x 3.8 cm)
Provenance
Private Collection, Canada.
An older Inupiaq whalebone mask that resembles 19th century examples of customary dance masks from the Point Hope area of Alaska. The porous surface of the whalebone of this mask features a dark patina and what appears to be lichens and other detritus that point to it being made from fossilized whalebone that was recovered by the carver. There is an older repair to the bottom of the mouth that may be from the time it was created.
