Description
ISAAC (IKE) CHARLIE (c. 1967-) NUU-CHAH-NULTH
Hummingbird Head Mask, c. 1990s
cedar wood and paint, 7 x 24.5 x 7 in (17.8 x 62.2 x 17.8 cm)
titled and signed, "HUMMINGBIRD IKE C.".
Provenance
Private Collection, North Carolina, acquired from the artist in Victoria, BC, 2006.
Ike Charlie is a Nuu-chah-nulth carver from Vancouver Island who is known for making masks and plaques. This mask depicts a hummingbird, of which there are two species found on Vancouver Island: rufous and Anna’s hummingbird. This mask likely depicts the latter, which can be distinguished from the rufous hummingbird by its green and pink head and throat. The mask is carved in red cedar and accented with green and pink formline and features a long, slender black and red beak. Although hummingbirds were not commonly depicted on historic Northwest Coast art, they have become a popular subject in the art market since the 1990s.
