UNIDENTIFIED INUPIAQ ARTIST
Mask, c. 1960s
whalebone, 5.5 x 4.5 x 3 in (14 x 11.4 x 7.6 cm)
Provenance
Private Collection, Canada.
Whalebone masks made by Inupiaq carvers have been a popular staple in the Alaska Native art market since at least the 1950s. This piece depicts a smiling human and is carved from the denser part of the whalebone.
