Maigelein Germany, 2nd half of the 17th century Colourless, slightly impure glass mass. Cone-shaped engraved floor with unprocessed demolition. Bowl-shaped wall with fifteen optically blown ribs and lip rim compressed by the two long sides. L. 10.8 cm, H. approx. 4.1 cm An almost identical Maigelein can be found in the collection of the Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz (available online). From the second half of the 15th century, Maigelein were widespread in Germany, France and the Netherlands. A Maigelein is a bowl or bowl-shaped hollow glass with a high-pitched bottom. The bulbous wall is usually decorated with ribs, cross ribs, dents or basket patterns, for which wooden hollow forms were used. The term Maigelein comes from the Old High German Magel, ''girl'' or from the Middle High German Miol, ''cup''.
