Vintage 1930s Art Deco PHOENIX GLASS Green Sculpted Pine Cone & Needles Glass Vase
Item Details
Description
A green sculpted vase in a shape very often used by Lalique but with a different motif, one of pine cones and needles. The size is just over 6 1/2" in diameter. Very good vintage condition; no cracks or repairs. Minor wear and flea bites according to age. Phoenix Glass, created in Philadelphia in 1880, designed and created decorative glass, vases, tableware, perfume bottles etc... until 1958. It still exists today after changing hands several times, but it now mostly produces test-tubes, small sample vials and promotional artifacts, nothing glamorous. For a brief period between 1930 and 1938, jointly with another Pennsylvania manufacturer, Consolidated Glass, it reproduced French art glass, mostly Lalique but also Daum and Baccarat. The Lalique connection was never fully understood, as many of their creations were unsigned identical carbon copies of Lalique's most famous vases (Archers, Perruches, Sauterelles, etc...). Some of their vases, 80 years later, are still difficult to determine as Lalique or Phoenix /Consolidated. Phoenix never used René Lalique signature, but unscrupulous intermediaries later did. Other Phoenix designs, vases in particular, copied the shape and the general appearance of Lalique items, but with slightly different motifs and colors. René Lalique, who had never officially given his permission, was aware of this but he never sued or try to make it stop. Various explanations have been advanced. Provenance: From the collection of the late MASSIMO COMOLI, celebrated opera set designer and architect, best known for working with the late Gianni Versace on the redesign of the iconic Villa Casa Casuarina in Miami Beach (formerly known as the Versace Mansion).
