Item Details
Description
Rene Jules Lalique (French, 1860-1945). "Ceylan" or "Huit Perruches (Eight Parakeets)" glass vase, 1924. Signed (acid etched) "R. LALIQUE" on underside. A stunning opalescent glass "Ceylan" vase designed in 1924 by the great Rene Lalique, a French master jeweler who was famous for his luxury glassware of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. Sometimes called "Huit Perruches" or "Eight Parakeets," the dazzling vessel displays just that: four pairs of nestling lovebirds in high relief. Perched as cuddling couples on bowed branches forming arches down the walls of the vase, the birds are rendered in meticulous detail, each wing, nape, and crown feather carefully delineated as they nuzzle their petite beaks together; elaborate, scrolling tendrils engraved in the background. Press-molded, the frosted glass boasts a satin-like surface with beautiful varying hues from deep violet and indigo to glowing gold and saffron when hit with certain light. Size: 5.2" Diameter x 9.5" H (13.2 cm x 24.1 cm)

Rene Lalique studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs de Paris and worked as a designer for jewelers in the 19th century prior to establishing his own atelier. In 1900, Lalique exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris thus establishing himself as a master jeweler. He went on to concentrate on glassmaking, creating striking bowls as well as perfume bottles and other vessels, embellishing his forms with intricate reliefs. In 1921, Lalique built a glassworks factory at Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace.
