Item Details
Description

  • ARTIST/SOURCE: ALEXANDER HESLER, AMERICAN (1823–1895) (FOR PRESIDENT) -AND- NICOLAS H. SHEPHERD (FOR 1ST LADY), *[BIDDING FOR MAIN IMAGE ONLY].
  • MEDIUM: PUBLISHED CONTEMPORARY PHOTOLITHOGRAPHS. (IN THE CASE OF 1ST LADY-WITH IMMACULATE RECENT RESTORATION).
  • DATE/PERIOD: 1860 (ORIGINAL SOURCE OF PRESIDENT) -AND- EARLIER IN 1846 (OF ORIGINAL SOURCE FOR 1ST LADY)
  • DIMENSION [INCHES]: 10 X 8" AND 10X8"
  • ORIGIN: ILLINOIS
  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • This combined two-photograph lot is comprised of contemporary Dye Based Photolithograph's-and are restoration prints produced 'after' the original photographs. The bidder will receive two (2) separate photographs of each sitter, instead of the combined "preview image". Rather than being a one-of-a-kind work, both are open edition, non-commercial sheet-fed mechanical prints, analagous to the process used for sheet-fed photogravures. The paper for each is 215 GSM, 12 MIL Matte, Light Fast and Acid Free. They will be shipped enclosed in polypropolene, archival presentation pockets and reinforced before shipping.

  • You are bidding on the rarest combined Lot of the Lincoln's historical significance in this acquisition of both an 1846 photograph of Abraham Lincoln's wife, 1st Lady Mary Todd Lincoln.. paired with an 1860 profile of the esteemed president. Although the preview image for this is presented in one combined image, the buyer will receive (2) separate photographs as pictured in the detail preview section above. Rarer still is the fact that this portrait of Mary Todd is not only the first known image of her.. But is also the most immaculate contemporary restoration of record on the market; as it is derived from the severely aged and damaged original. These 2 images have 2 separate historical dates, plus 2 different photographers and sittings. Mary Todd Lincoln's photograph was done by Nicolas H. Shepherd in Springfield, Ill at the same time Shepherd took the first known photograph of Abe Lincoln (just as he had been elected to the House of Representatives in 1846). Lincoln married Mary on November 4, 1842 yet they had not had wedding photographs made. Therefore their 1846 sittings with Shepherd served that purpose. Mary was 28 at the time of their initial sitting and the president was 37. However, very importantly, this profile of Lincoln was not taken by Shepherd on the 1846 date. Instead the profile was created in 1860 by the distinguished photographer Alexander Hesler.
