1790s Anti-Slavery Half Penny Am I Not a Man and a Brother, GB D&H-1038bÂ
An anti-slavery British Half Penny coin from the 1790s. Measuring 1.125" in diameter, Great Britain, n.d. [ca. 1795]. A Great Britain, Middlesex copper halfpenny [GB D&H-1038b] depicting a slave kneeling in shackles with his hands clasped together in supplication. A very good example with attractive medium brown patina to both sides. Generally well centered, all design elements are sharply to fully defined. UNC details a small scrape on the reverse. Light rubbing and scratching to both sides, with greater wear to the edge.
The text around the border of the obverse reads "AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER." The coin reverse shows two hands grasping one another with an inscription that reads "MAY SLAVERY & OPPRESSION CEASE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD." And around the coin edge is the inscription, "PAYABLE IN LANCASTER LONDON OR LIVERPOOL."Â
