Description

Pair of Central Bank of Alabama $10 Notes with Vignettes of Cotton-Picking Slaves

A pair of two $10 notes, numbered 964 and 2359 respectively, issued by the Central Bank of Alabama. Both signed by the bank's President William Knox at lower right. Measuring 3" x 7", Montgomery, Alabama, dated January 1, 1856. With a panoramic vignette of the city of Montgomery that stretches across most of the note, with cotton-picking slaves illustrated in the background and foreground. Features additional portrait of President George Washington at bottom right corner. Expected wear, including creasing, darkened soiling, minor edge tearing, and surface wrinkling. Otherwise, good condition.

The Central Bank of Alabama was chartered by the Alabama State legislature in 1854. The bank was constructed at One Court Square in Montgomery, Alabama and completed in 1855, where it still stands today. William Knox, the first president of the bank, was an immigrant who arrived in Montgomery sometime during the early 1830's from Strabane, Ireland. The bank was the first to grant loans to the Confederate government during the early days of the American Civil War. Bills issued by the Central Bank of Alabama have illustrations of plantations, railroads, and other aspects of life and labor in Old South.
