"Slave Children" Carte-de-Visite Used by Abolitionists to Support Education
A vignette portrait of slave children Rebecca Huger, Charles Taylor, and Rosina Downs, from New Orleans. Measuring 2.375" x 4", New York, ca. 1864. On verso, the image is identified as photograph No. 4, "Entered, according to the act of Congress, in the year 1864, by S. Tackaberry", with "The nett [sic] proceeds from the sale of these photographs will be devoted to the education of colored people in the Department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen'l Banks" printed below. Produced by photographer Charles Paxson. With light soiling and staining; slightly bumped corners.
This image was part of a series, and just one of several former slaves photographed by Charles Paxson, their images were sold between 1863 and 1864 as a fundraiser for freedmen’s schools in New Orleans. The appearance of the children, all relatively light-skinned, also demonstrated that slavery was not simply a matter of skin color, but of birth.
