1855 Issue of "Frederick Douglass' Paper", Excellent Anti-Slavery Content
An issue of "Frederick Douglass' Paper" with numerous articles on slavery. 4pp, measuring 18.75" x 26.5", Rochester, New York, dated April 6, 1855. Published by Frederick Douglass, Volume VIII, No. 16, Whole No. 380. With flattened folds and creasing at the edges with small tears. Light toning throughout with scattered soiling. Overall, very good.
The issue includes letters from J.W. Loguen and Reverend Dr. Pennington, along with an account of the South Gardner Murder. There are also numerous articles on slavery: "The Columbus Slave Case"; "Senators Gillette and Wilson-Slavery-the Constitution, and the Free Soil Party"; "Personal Liberty in New York"; "How Slavery Was Abolished in the British Colonies"; "The Slave Rosetta Restored to Freedom-Ohio Law-He Who Runs May Read"; "Slavery A Curse"; and "Annual Anti-Slavery Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio."Â
"Frederick Douglass' Paper" came about with the merging of the "Liberty Party Paper of Syracuse" and Douglass'Â "The North Star" paper in 1851. In publication until 1860, the abolitionist paper not only rejected slavery, but also fought against the oppression of women and other minority groups.
