An issue of the "Anti-Slavery Bugle" from 1846. 4pp of a bifolium, measuring 12.75" x 19", Salem, Ohio, dated July 17, 1846. Volume I, No. 51, edited by Benjamin S. Jones and J. Elizabeth Jones, and printed by J.H. Painter.With light edge toning, dampstaining, foxing, and several spots of staining. Flattened folds. There are small pin holes along the left edge where it appears the paper was removed from a larger volume. Very good overall.

The paper was published every Friday and served as an important platform for Garrisonian radicalism west of the Appalachians. This issues contains articles and editorials on Governor Pratt, the riot at Princeton, Christian Slaves, an attempt to destroy the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society, an attack on a colored man and his wife, and more. 

The "Anti-Slavery Bugle" was first published in June 1845 in Lisbon, Ohio, but soon moved to Salem - likely because the city was more welcoming to the radical paper. Salem was home to many Quaker families and was an active station on the Underground Railroad, making it an ideal city to be based in. The paper's motto proudly declared "No Union with Slaveholders."
