5 Pre-Civil War Newspapers Discussing The Issue of Slavery, 1859-1860

A group of five newspapers reporting on slavery: one issue of "The Liberator" and four issues of the "New York Tribune." Published in Boston and New York, dating from August 26, 1859 to November 23, 1860. The issues include speeches by President-Elect Abraham Lincoln and William H. Seward, reports on Southern slavery and slave codes, and editorials on Republicanism and slavery, slavery as a religious institution, and much more. These newspapers offer a fantastic perspective on the mindset of the country in the leadup to the Civil War relating to the debate on slavery.

1. "The Liberator", Boston, dated August 26, 1859. Volume XXIX, No. 34, Whole No. 1606. Publishing a letter from Rev. J.C. Wilson on "Slavery as a Religious Institution"; "The Great Emancipation Anniversary" from a London paper; "New England Convention of Colored Citizens"; "Christian Anti-Slavery Convention", etc.
2. "New-York Tribune", New York, dated February 2, 1860. Volume XIX, No. 5,858. Excerpt: "…There is a pretty general agreement that the country is in a disturbed condition on the Slavery question. But what is to be done? Almost every man has a specific of his own. We need not refer to those recommended by the extreme men of the North and of the South - Immediate Emancipation of the Salves, and Unlimited Expansion of Slavery. But two new remedies have lately been advertised. The first is Mr. Douglas's. It has been called, not inappropriately, his 'Slave Code for the States'…"
3. "New-York Tribune", New York, dated March 20, 1860. Volume XV, No. 1,546. Articles on "The Proposed Slave Code" and "Northern Strikes and Southern Slavery."
4. "New-York Tribune", New York, dated October 9, 1860. Volume XIV, No. 604. With an article on Republicanism and slavery, a published speech of William H. Seward, and a "Lincoln and Hamlin Rallying Song."
5. "New-York Tribune", New York, dated November 23, 1860. Volume XVI, No. 1617. With a published speech by Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois to the Wide-Awake parade.
