Benjamin Harrison Appoints Colonel of Infantry, Ca. 1892
PPDS, 1p, measuring 15.5" x 19.125", dated January 7, 1892, Washington, D.C. A document naming one William H. Jordan "…Colonel of Infantry in the service of the United States: to rank as such from the first day of November eighteen hundred and ninety-one." Signed by the President at lower right as "Benj. Harrison" and countersigned by Secretary of War Stephen B. Elkins as "S. B. Elkins". Docketing in red at top left upon receipt of the adjutant general's office. Exhibits flattened creasing, light age toning, and areas of faint foxing throughout. Else, near fine.
Colonel William Henry Jordan (1837-1909) first entered West Point in 1855, graduating in 1860. Upon graduation, Jordan was assigned to the 2nd United States Infantry in Minnesota but was soon transferred East upon the outbreak of the Civil War, where he served under General George B. McClellan. He was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel of the Nineteenth Infantry on April 9, 1886, and then to Colonel of the same regiment in November 1891. Jordan then retired from active service the next year, at his own request.
