A carved wooden ceremonial mask fragment of an ancient Kanaga mask, with highly stylized facial features, large flat nose, openwork eyes and painted with organic pigments. Dogon peoples, Mali, West Africa. kanaga masks are worn at rituals called dama, whose goal is to transport the souls of deceased family members away from the village and to enhance the prestige of the deceased and his descendants by magnificent masked performances and generous displays of hospitality. The mask fragment measures 24 x 5 inches. There is no display stand included. Provenance: A Private New Jersey collection.
