Description
Ancient carved wooden mask with highly stylized form, exaggerated facial features and obvious field use over many years. Dogon peoples, Mali, West Africa. kanaga masks are worn at rituals called dama, whose goal is to transport the souls of deceased family members away from the village and to enhance the prestige of the deceased and his descendants by magnificent masked performances and generous displays of hospitality. The mask measures 21 x 7 x 9.5 inches. Provenance: A Private New Jersey Collection since 1997.
