A well weathered and eroded old shrine idol featuring two faces in either direction, a encrusted surface of ritual offerings and a overall powerful and dramatic presence. Such figures are called bateba , and serve as intermediaries between protective spirits, Thila, and men. The idol measures 10 inches ( 14.5 inches on professional base). Provenance:Drs Jean and Noble Endicott, New York.
