Description
A very old and weathered carved wooden Dege or Monkey mask with highly stylized form, wide open work eyes and a very weathered surface. According to Dogon beliefs, the monkey represents a wild and uncivilized spirit, which is considered dangerous and personifies antisocial behavior. Dogon peoples, Mali, West Africa. This mask measures 12 x 7.5 x 6 inches. The mask will include a wall mount display stand. Provenance: Ex Sol & Josephine Levit collection, New York, and was purchased in Paris in 1978.

Fair, strong solid wood completely weathered and eroded.
