Item Details
Description
  • Title:Rare John Chandler Moore 3 Piece Sterling Silver Service for Gelston and Treadwell
  • Description: This incredible service, comprising a teapot, creamer, and covered sugar bowl, with a distinct tapering octagonal-form, with panels of chased flowers, foliate, landscapes, architecture, and superb diaperwork that each taper to an eight-sided steeple-form finial, banded at rim and foot, all raised on four Rococo-style feet. This exquisite piece was produced by John Chandler Moore for Gelston and Treadwell in New York, circa 1843-1845. In 1851, Moore was contracted by Tiffany & Co. to produce hollowware exclusively for Tiffany’s using sterling silver, as opposed to the then-typical coin silver. During his tenure, he patented the now-famous Louis XIV pattern, aligning with his passion for the Rococo Revival style. This set is extremely rare. These rarely show up in such extraordinary condition. This is the best, fanciest, and most ornate we’ve seen, depicting architecture, landscapes, and flower motifs.
