Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States, Alaska, or Canada, Tlingit, ca. late 20th century CE. An outstanding and rare frog clan ceremonial hat made from wood inlaid with nacre shells, and the interior is lined with a white rabbit fur, and 2 white ermine pelts form the exterior tassels. This piece comes in a large glass case. This hat was traditionally worn by a person of importance and would mark the clan affiliation, undoubtedly the frog serving as the crest. The frog is an animal of great importance in Northwest Coast art and culture symbolizing rebirth and change, living in two worlds, in water and on land, and was believed to be the spirit helper of shamans. Given its vocal ability to croak and trill, the frog is highly regarded as a great communicator, who represents the voice of the people, and the calls / songs are believed to be magical, containing divine power. Size: 11" Diameter x 14.75" H (27.9 cm x 37.5 cm); case: 16" L x 16" W x 24.5" H (40.6 cm x 40.6 cm x 62.2 cm)
