Item Details
Description
First Nations, Alaska or Canada, Haida or Tlingit, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-built wooden salmon hook known as a leister hook because of its central iron barb; leister refers to the method through which the fish is speared or barbed. The 2 outer arms each bear a wooden barb to ensure the fish does not escape, and the topmost iron barb is used to quickly dispatch the animal. Size: 14.5" L x 6.4" W x 1.5" H (36.8 cm x 16.3 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private West Jordon, Utah, USA collection; ex-Creede, Colorado, USA collection; ex-Marian Davis collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, from the early 1960s
